Obama to Close Guantanamo
President Barak Obama announced this week that he plans on closing the Guantanamo detention facility within the year. This is obviously great news to not only the detainees, but the millions of Americans whom are embarrassed by the notion of holding people without charges and without the right to any type of hearing.
The next logical question though is what to do with the people currently being held. It is safe to say that there are probably people there that are terrorists and need to be held. How are we going to hold these individuals and still protect the integrity of our beloved systems of justice? The answer is that we try them in U.S. courts. If we truly believe in due process and the constitutional guarantees that protect our citizens against our government, then we have to treat non-citizens with same measure of due process. It is the only way that we show the world that we are a nation of laws and that we truly believe in our own system of justice.
